Historical Figures: Creative Non-Fiction Writing Project

I was commissioned to teach several classes in ELA how to write creative non-fiction.

The first class consisted of teaching the students how to conduct research on a historical figure using the Internet. I provided a list of historical figures from their community, and students were asked to select one to research.

A week later, I taught a second class about how to turn that information into a first-person monologue about the person’s life.

As a surprise for the teachers and students, I had volunteer community actors bring life to their stories, by having them re-enact the scripts, using the students’ words.

This is the result.
