Disclosure: Our family received a free sneak preivew of the Breakout 902 Escape Rooms in Coldbrook in exchange for this blog post. Our goal is to help you explore the Valley so you can have more family fun. All opinions are our own.

There’s a new game in town and you need to check it out! It’s called Breakout 902 Escape Rooms!

Here’s what the website says:

Our escape rooms are an exhilarating test of your wits.
Our 60 minute rooms are recommended for 4 – 8 players, where players solve a series of puzzles and riddles with clues to ultimately escape.

Our Experience

When our family wrote our summer wish list, going to an escape room was at the top of mine! I was so excited when my mom told me that connections of hers at CentreStage Theatre were opening one in Coldbrook! I knew we had to check it out!

We visited the Breakout 902 Escape Rooms a few days before the official opening so we got a sneak peek of the space and how the games worked.

When we arrived, owner and creator Laurent Jacquard (originally from the Valley) and his sister, Tanya Doucette, the site manager, were both here to welcome us.

Our team consisted of my husband and I, our boys (10 and 12) and my parents.

We needed all the help we could get.
Correction. I needed all the help I could get!

We thought it would make a great family team-building experience, and we were right!

How it Works

We had no idea what to expect when we went. None of us had ever done an escape room before.

Do we actually get locked in a room?
No. You can still get out! But, it helps to set the scene, thinking you are locked in and trying to escape!

What if we get stuck and it’s too hard?
They don’t want you to become frustrated! Tanya and Laurent were in a control room watching and listening, and gave us unlimited clues to help us when we got stuck.
When you get frustrated and want to give up, no one is having fun any more. This ensures you can keep going!

What am I looking for?
When we entered the room, there were many items that had locks on them. Through searches we found some keys which opened things to reveal more clues. We figured out some puzzles which helped open other spaces for more clues.

I have to be vague here, otherwise I will give away the secrets!
But, once you get the hang of what you are looking for, everything falls into place.

Ages

The escape rooms are recommended for those who are 14+. Anyone younger than 13 needs to be accompanied by an adult.
The room is way too hard for children to complete on their own. Older teens could work together to solve the puzzles, however.

My boys were 10 and 12 and loved it. They are extremely bright kids, great at math, and love to solve riddles and can easily think outside the box. They were not too young to play. In fact, most times I think they were better than me. They did try to plough through things, and we had to remind them to slow down and not to reef on anything!

You really need to know the abilities of your kids. Every child is different. But, I really wouldn’t recommend anyone younger than 10!

The Rooms

There are two rooms currently available at Breakout 902 Escape Rooms. The second is actually opening on August 10, 2018, and a third coming soon.

We completed (or tried to complete) the Bank Heist Room, looking for clues to help our crime syndicate open the bank vault.
The second room is Aunt Edna’s Condo, where you are looking for clues to your inheritance.

Success or Failure?

No, we didn’t actually get out in the hour allotted time. With about 1.5 hours, we are sure we would have been there!
But, we had an awful lot of fun trying. We each got to use some of the skills we were good at from math equations, to picking locks.
However, apparently, I yelled too much! We all have our strengths!

We did have a lot of fun, and when we go back to complete another room, we will now know what we are looking for and how it works, so should be that much better!
