Valley Family Fun is eating out with friends and family around the Annapolis Valley to report back to you new places to try. It’s all about supporting our local business owners and eating locally!

I never need an excuse to go out for lunch with my girlfriends, especially if it involves trying somewhere new!

The Cider Press Cafe at Wheaton’s in Berwick is like a phoenix born again, rising from the ashes.

Since the tragic fire a few years ago, Wheaton’s store and cafe managed to rebuild and offer the same great service and food.

One of the things that the Cider Press Cafe is most famous for, I think, is their curried carrot ginger soup.

You can even buy some to take home with you!

The cafe has a lovely lunch menu with salads, soup, sandwiches and quiche. I went for the chicken salad sandwich with apple! YUMM!

Or, there’s the roast beef sandwich, too!

We also ordered carrot cake and the famous coconut cake, but couldn’t wait to dive in, that we totally forgot to get pictures. Trust us. There was nothing left at the end to take a picture of!

Wheaton’s Cider Press Cafe is also a great place to take your family as there is a children’s menu and we saw lots of toddlers there when we went!

Family Fun: Martial arts are a great learning tool for kids

“Martial arts is not self defence,” says dad Jon Saklofske of Kentville. “It is an art, and is not about punching, kicking, hurting an opponent or winning a fight. It is about learning unique cultural traditions and becoming self-aware of your body.”

Valley Family Fun is eating out with friends and family around the Annapolis Valley to report back to you new places to try. It’s all about supporting our local business owners and eating locally!

My friend Lisa and I like to make the rounds of eating out in Wolfville. We get to catch up and try different local restaurants.

This time, we hit Danji Korean restaurant in Wolfville.

There are a lot of great Korean dishes to try, and what I love about it is that I can always find a dish that isn’t spicy!

My favourite is the Bulgolgi, a stir fried meat dish served with rice.

Lisa got the Bibimbap with vegetables and a fried egg on top.

There is a small selection, but everything I’ve ever had has been really good!

There are only a few seats inside, so make sure you get there and claim your seat, because you won’t want to miss out on this culinary trip to Korea!

Having fun at the Kingston Family Fitness Trail

Kingston Family Fitness Trail

Having fun at the Kingston Family Fitness Trail at Stronach Park, Kingston NS with www.ValleyFamilyFun.ca

Located on Bridge Street in Kingston, is the Stronach Park with the Kingston Family Fitness Trail.

According to the village’s website:

This is a lovely picnic park with water fountain, garden areas and trellis for prom/wedding picture taking, ducks to feed and a family fitness trail to challenge.

Having fun at the Kingston Family Fitness Trail at Stronach Park, Kingston NS with www.ValleyFamilyFun.ca

When we were kids, our parents would often take us here for a picnic because we loved playing on the fitness equipment around the trail. Although the trail is new, the fitness equipment is completely updated, and makes for a fun outing out for the family!

The Trail

Having fun at the Kingston Family Fitness Trail at Stronach Park, Kingston NS with www.ValleyFamilyFun.ca

The trail itself is only about 700m and is in a horseshoe shape through the woods starting at the parking lot, and ending by the duck pond.

The trail is completely flat, making it good for strollers or wheelchairs.

Having fun at the Kingston Family Fitness Trail at Stronach Park, Kingston NS with www.ValleyFamilyFun.ca

There are a variety of fitness equipment pieces in the woods as you walk along the trail.

It took us about 20 minutes to walk along the trail, but you could spend so much more time, stopping to play at each station.

We had lots of fun!

Get Your Kitchen Party started with The Kitchen Party Cookbook by Jenny Osburn

Disclosure: I received a copy of the Kitchen Party Cookbook by Jenny Osburn to review. I am so excited to try it out because I’m just so proud of Jenny! All opinions are my own.

Jenny Osburn has done it again! She has created another great cookbook featuring recipes with local food, including a shopping guide so you know just where in the Valley to find the ingredients!

I met Jenny over 20 years ago when we sang alto together in the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir. Let me tell you, she’s multi-talented!

Jenny and some of her family members ran the Union Street Cafe in Berwick for many years, until recently, she passed the torch to focus on other ventures, like creating cookbook art.

Jenny’s first cookbook, The Union Street Cafe Cookbook came out last spring and features popular recipes from the restaurant. Read my review here!

Now, Jenny has come out with a new cookbook featuring recipes that are great for a Nova Scotian tradition: the Kitchen Party!

Besides the recipes, Jenny gives some menu suggestions, tips on how to prepare for a large crowd, and of course where to source the ingredients locally!

As Jenny said to me, and I totally agree, the book is just as much a piece of art as it is a cookbook!  The front cover design is by Laura MacDonald of Deep Hollow Print and the book is bound by Gaspereau Press. You will love how the book feels in your hands.

I went to the book launch party and sampled so many great dishes from the cookbook.

I went home and cracked open my copy to add some post-it notes to the pages I wanted to try. I’m not sure why I bothered, because I think I tagged almost every page!

The recipes I have tried so far were a huge success and left the family begging for more!
