What’s that Smell? A Guessing Game for the Whole Family
What’s that Smell? A Guessing Game for the Whole Family
When we were kids, my mom used to set up a guessing game for us for Girl Guide events or birthday parties. We called it “What’s that Smell?” or the Smelling Guessing Game.
So, when we were having family over for dinner and I wanted to have a family-friendly activity for us to do afterwards, I knew just the game.
I phoned my mom, and lo and behold, she still had the tiny glass jars, still numbered, that we used in our childhood.
You might be able to find small jars at the dollar store, or I would recommend using dixie cups, or any other small containers you can find.
Fill each jar with a liquid. This was the fun part, and Mom and I brainstormed for a long time and probably could have filled dozens of jars! We happened to have 17.
I used:
- Pancake syrup
- Milk
- Maple flavouring (this was too close to the pancake syrup, so use one or the other)
- Laundry detergent
- Vinegar
- Soya Sauce
- Windex
- Water
- Bleach
- Almond Flavouring
- Vanilla
- Lemon Juice
- Cherry juice
- Coffee
- Peppermint extract
- Beer
- Mr. Clean
Other possibilities were
- Honey
- Paint thinner
- Molasses
- Wine
- Orange Juice
- Mouth wash
- Pickle Juice
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Apple Juice
What else can you think of?
I set the bottles up around the table, each with a numbered tag. Each person had a paper and a pencil and spread themselves around the table. We rotated around, smelling the contents, and writing down our guesses.
DO NOT TASTE the contents! I made this very clear!
Some of the liquids were really hard to guess, especially the water!
The kids had a lot of fun doing this, and could guess most of the smells. The youngest, at 7, needed to be paired with an adult.
We spent about 15 minutes smelling the contents before people stated their guesses and I revealed the answers. The best score was 14/17! But, really, it was all friendly competition!
This is a fun, multi-aged family activity that only takes a few minutes to set up, and is a fun challenge for the nose!
Family Night with Greco Pizza
Family Night with Greco Pizza
Disclosure: This is a sponsored post to show how you can have a family night with Greco Pizza. Really, it’s any excuse for us to get together!
There is something different about hanging out with family that you can’t find anywhere else.
With family, you can completely be yourself, you can wear your pajamas to dinner (even the adults) and you don’t have to set the table or prepare a fancy meal. It’s enough to just be together.
My brother and his family live 400m away. Literally. We looked it up on Google maps tonight.
There is however, a giant ravine between us, making it longer to travel there. We always joke that we need a zipline between our houses, and we could be there within 30 seconds.
Although we live so close, we do not get together as often as we should. We’re always busy, running around with kids, or frankly, just tired.
There really should be no excuse, and we need to remember that family time doesn’t have to be complicated, it’s just about being together.
Which is why, we decided to kick start our March Break with family time.
Scarlett and Digby are literally best friends. So, any time we can get the two of them together, everyone is happy.
We started off with a walk in the ravine (that separates our houses) to get some fresh air, and to give our dogs a run.
The path was a bit tricky with all the ice, but we made it without too many casualties.
After that, we had well-worked up an appetite.
Instead of worrying who was going to cook, or about what to serve that everyone would eat, we decided to order from Greco, New Minas.
To meet everyone’s tastes, we got 2 XL pizzas.
1/2 Hawaiian/ 1/2 works
1/2 cheese/ 1/2 pepperoni
And, no meal is complete without garlic fingers and donair sauce!
Overall, there were a lot of very happy smiles.
The pizza was delicious, but I think one of the best parts was the slightly flavoured crusts that may have been garlic Parmesan! It was so good and made the pizza complete!
One thing we know is that we will be ordering from here many more times in the future!
Sing the song… 3-10 30-30!
Hours and Location
There are four Greco locations in the Annapolis Valley: Bishopville, Middleton, Greenwood and New Minas.
The New Minas location has changed to 8927 Commercial Street, in the strip mall across from the movie theatre.
Greco’s menu can be found online, where you can also place an order.

What we’ve discovered is that Family Night does not need to be complicated. If you make it simple, it means you are more apt to do it again, soon, which is exactly what we plan on doing.
Making family night a habit.
Easy company, simple set up and delicious food, thanks to Greco.

Eating out with Friends and Family at the Church Brewing CO in Wolfville
Our goal is to try as many local restaurants as we can and tell you about the, such as the Church Brewing Co in Wolfville! This is not a sponsored post.
Sometimes it is hard when a building and a space we love is no longer. Sometimes it is hard to accept, but sometimes we need to be grateful that the building and essence has been saved and repurposed.
This is the story of The Church Brewing Co. in Wolfville.
The story is similar to that of Avondale Sky Winery, in many ways where an old church was purposed into a beautiful winery.
Now, the former United Church in Wolfville has been repurposed into The Church Brewing Co.
Inside, the space has been changed into an incredible music venue and restaurant. I decided to go and check it out for lunch with a friend who used to attend church here as a child. I also remember singing here in choir, and admiring the acoustics.
The Space
The atmosphere inside the Church Brewing Co. is very beautiful, keeping many aspects of the former church feel in its decor.
There are many tables throughout the space, and even in the loft at the back. There is a stage area at the front for live music performances.
And even comfy couches for the booths.
The Food
Did you know the Church Brewing Co. serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks? Yes, they are open at 10am for breakfast!
I ordered the vegetarian sandwich, and my friend, the chicken.
The fries are to die for! I can’t wait to go back and try a few more of their menu items including breakfast!
Did I mention they have a popcorn machine, and they bring you a free bucket of popcorn while you wait?
Hours and Location
The Church Brewing Co is open every day from about 10am to 11pm or midnight, and closed on Mondays (STC).
It is located on Main Street in Wolfville.
If you would like a unique place to eat out in Wolfville with great food, and an inviting atmosphere, I encourage you to check out the Church Brewing Co with brewery coming soon!
Exploring New Glasgow, Pictou County, NS for Family Fun
Exploring New Glasgow, Pictou County, NS for Family Fun
Our family is always looking for mini-away adventures, like the one we recently took to New Glasgow in Pictou County, NS.
Sometimes there are places we want to explore, but are just too far for a day trip, so we try to make a two-day adventure out of it, seeing as much as we can in the area. Much to the boys’ chagrin, it often involves going hiking.
Visiting the Museum of Industry in Stellarton, near New Glasgow, has been on my bucket list for a long time. Because it was more than a day trip, we decided to make an overnight trip of it.
We LOVED the Museum of Industry and highly recommend a visit. Read about our trip here.
While in the area, to make the most of your trip, here are some other things to check out.
Hikes in the New Glasgow Area
Hopewell Footbridge
Just outside New Glasgow in the community of Hopewell lies the Hopewell Footbridge. Here’s what the website says:
The Hopewell Footbridge is one of the last surviving footbridges in North America. It was originally built in the 1800’s along with another footbridge, which was destroyed by ice and extreme winter conditions. In 1991 large effort was made to restore the bridge. The bridge itself stems off into a series of trails and walking paths overlooking the river.
Our GPS took us to the “backside” of the bridge which was steps from the Riverside Park Road. If you take the entrance off Elgin Road, you will come to the main part of the park, and turn to the left, following the river through an old baseball diamond, and along the river about 5 minutes, to the bridge. It’s a short point to point, but a beautiful place to explore, and fun to see this old historic footbridge.
You will definitely need your GPS to help get you there, because it is off the beaten track, and about 20 minutes on the Truro side of New Glasgow.
Trenton Park
Trenton Park is located less than 10 minutes from New Glasgow. Here’s what the website says:
The Park offers 6km or walking/hiking trails winding their way through 565 acres of century-old coniferous trees. A 6.5km (4.4mi) mountain bike trail is also on site. Park visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll (1.6km) along the prepared trail or stop to fish trout from the 3 man-made ponds.
What’s nice about the park is that you can do a choose-your-own-adventure, and pick and choose from the various trails to make a hike of your own desired length. The trails are extremely well marked, and it’s easy to navigate.
We went in the dead of winter when the trails were pure ice, so it was a little rough going, but still doable. We started down by the airport (second park entrance instead of the main one) and the scenery wasn’t that exciting, but it was an easy, accessible place to get out and stretch our legs.
Beaches
When you ask people from the area where you should visit in the New Glasgow area, most people say Melmerby Beach Provincial Park which is only a 20 minute drive from town.
Although we went in the winter, it was still beautiful, and you can imagine how wonderful it would be in the summer!
This is a place I would like to go back to again… especially when it is warmer!
Restaurants
On recommendations by friends, we ate at the Appleseed Modern Diner in New Glasgow. The food was delicious and there were so many yummy things to choose from!
It’s a great spot for kids with big booths, bright colours, and yummy food! Not to mention there is an arcade in the same building!
We would eat there any time in a heartbeat!
Accommodations
Our family loves to stay in Air B&Bs and we found a great one right in New Glasgow! When we went on to book it, we saw that local friends had also just stayed there and had highly recommended it, too!
Overall, our family had a great time hanging out in New Glasgow and area! We got a taste for the town, and know where we want to explore further the next time we go back!

Fun Developmental Activities for Babies
Fun Developmental Activities for Babies
Disclosure: This is a sponsored post about fun developmental activities for babies. It’s a good way to get information to you and to help me offset some website costs!
There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored by your baby, but it’s up to mom and dad to come up with different games that will thrill the little one. Every activity we’ve listed below constitutes something that can be both fun and functional for your child. Encouraging the use of their senses is the key element here.
Crawling Encouragement
Your baby may enjoy tummy time with a bit of pulling across the floor. Give the child some incentive by placing a toy just out of their reach and bring it to their attention. He or she may try to crawl across the floor to get to the toy.
Be sure to create closure and success with the toy at the end of the activity. The baby will enjoy the game, which translates to encouragement for success next time.
Tissue-Paper Fun
This activity involves a fresh layer of tissue paper tucked under a couch cushion. Allow the bulk of the paper to hang off the couch until it touches the ground. This tissue curtain is a perfect sensory wall now.
Lay the baby on the floor with their feet touching the tissue paper and couch. Allow them to crinkle the paper under their feet. He or she will likely kick the paper and giggle at the sound and sensation.
Mimicking
Ask the baby a question, such as “how big are you?”. Exaggerate the baby’s size by holding out your arms as wide as possible. Perform this activity several times a day. At some point, the baby might find it interesting to hold his or her arms out to that wide stance.
Alternatively, try a mirror game. Hold the baby close to you and make a silly face. Perform other movements with your body while carefully holding the child. He or she may mimic these motions as the activity progresses.
Point it Out
Taking a baby out on an outdoor adventure is a stimulating time. Choose your locations wisely. Keep it simple, such as visiting a park in the spring. Physically point to items in the surrounding area. Name them with a clear voice. You might try using the word in a sentence, such as “the rose is red”.
The baby may not look too intrigued, but the stimulation from the environment and your voice will make these connections true in time.
Singing and Talking
Parents need to forego the baby talk. It’s more important to speak in a normal tone and use daily language. The baby may be a newborn, but its brain cells are making countless connections right now. The language that they hear will make an impact on the child’s success in life. Communication is key.
Adding in rhythm to speech by way of singing is another way to bond with the child while improving his or her brain cell connections. The child may be more inclined to speak earlier with rhythm and language bound together in song.
Texture Fun
Fill a large resealable bag with water and fish-shaped sponges. Place the baby on his or her stomach with the bag laying on the floor. The bag, sponges, and water become fun textures for the baby’s hands. Always monitor this playtime to make sure the bag doesn’t leak or pop. Only use sponges so no pointed objects puncture the bag. You can play this texture game whenever tummy time comes up in the future.
Toy Tracking
A baby’s eyesight continues to develop from birth until they reach 12 months of age. You can encourage sharp eyesight for your child by playing a tracking game with them. When your baby is laying on his or her back, hold up a favorite toy. Dance the toy in the air as it passes above your child’s face.
Because the toy is a fascinating subject for a baby, he or she should follow it with their eyes. This tracking game helps with focus and hand-eye coordination.
Peek-a-Boo
Babies don’t understand that a person still exists when he or she leaves the room. This complex idea only develops later on in childhood. For this reason, it’s a good idea to play the old-fashioned peek-a-boo game. Cover your face with your hands and reappear several times. The activity stimulates the mind and conveys the thought that the person is still there even though a visual isn’t possible.
Fun Scents
While visual and auditory cues are important to a baby’s development, be sure not to forget about their sense of smell. Cut open an orange and hold it up to the baby’s nose. These sweet, attractive scents will create neural connections for future associations.
Avoid any unpleasant scents that might draw a negative reaction, there’s no reason to create these associations. The baby will come across bad smells, such as spoiled milk, in due time.
Facial Recognition
Point out the family members in the household so the baby practices facial recognition. Say “I’m Mommy” or point to a brother or sister to identify them. At some point, the baby might mimic this behavior as he or she learns to speak. Facial recognition is important because it teaches the baby who to bond with along with understanding their boundaries outside of the home. Unfamiliar faces will be met with questions in the future, for example.
Massage Time
A massage may not seem like a developmental activity, but it shores up the emotional bond between a parent and child. The baby knows that he or she is loved. Lay the baby down on a blanket, warm up the room to the point where only wearing a diaper will be comfortable for them. Use gentle strokes as you massage the baby’s limbs.
This activity creates bonding as well as body awareness. Children eventually learn that they’re wholly separate from their parents.
Pay close attention to the baby as the activity progresses. He or she can have a short attention span. If their interest wanes, try another activity at a later time. Engaged babies will show their interest. This excitement is what you want to see in your child as he or she discovers the world.
