For the past couple of years, my skin care regimen consisted of a bar of Dove soap and bottle of Olay moisturizer.
My old routine was cheap, quick and easy, but maybe not the most effective.
But now as I approach my 40s, I am starting to notice the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles! Yikes! Time to start taking better care of my skin!
When I was asked to trial a series of products by Rodan + Fields as distributed through independent consultant Kate Montgomery, I jumped at the chance! With a background in science, I welcomed the opportunity to engage in a bit of qualitative research!
The first step that Kate had me do was to determine the Regimen that would be best for me. METHODOLOGY:
I was worried before I started this Regimen that I wouldn’t be able to keep it up twice a day. With two little kids, I don’t get a lot of time to myself – especially in the bathroom. However, I was easily able to fit the Redefine Regimen into my daily routine.
Step 1: Daily Cleansing Mask
The Daily Cleansing Mask is a gentle exfoliating clay mask which takes only two minutes to dry.
In that time, I brush my teeth and do 100 calf raises. I’m going to have great skin and great legs thanks to Rodan + Fields!
Step 2: Pore Minimizing Toner
This was my favourite part of the Regimen. I had never used a toner before, and I realize now what I had been missing all these years.
My skin felt so clean and refreshed afterwards. I swear I could feel my pores shrinking each time I used it!
Step 3: Triple Defense Treatment (AM) or Overnight Restorative Cream (PM).
A wonderful final step to the Regimen!
I don’t like moisturizers that are overly perfumed or make me feel greasy and weighted down. They spoil all the work I just did cleaning all that stuff off my face!
Both of these creams were very soothing with a very light, pleasant fragrance. After finishing step 3 it felt wrong to put on makeup and dirty up my face again!

I have been using the products for one month, and I am already seeing positive results.
My skin feels cleaner and is much smoother and softer. I have fewer breakouts, and I feel I need far less makeup to smooth out my complexion.
I haven’t really been using the products long enough to notice dramatic differences in fine lines and wrinkles, so the jury’s still out on that one.
One thing that really surprised me was how well this regimen works on breakouts. I had a large blemish appear in the middle of my forehead one night. I washed my face that night and the following morning, and by that time the zit was gone! I was going to do a before and after picture of that, but there wasn’t time!

PRODUCT SAFETY:
One concern I always have about cosmetic products is whether the product contains ingredients that are harmful to my health or to the environment. I have found the database on www.ewg.org to be a useful source of data regarding nearly every compound used in the cosmetics industry.
Only the Triple Defense Treatment day cream was in the database and was given a good score of score of 3 out of 10 (moderately low toxicity).
I checked all the other ingredients individually of the other products, and found very few to be rated higher than a three.
Many of the ingredients are not commonly used in other products, so many ratings were based on limited data. This indicated to me that Rodan + Fields products are quite different from what you would find on the drug store shelf, and that the company is making an effort to avoid ingredients that are known to be harmful to people and the planet.

OTHER PRODUCTS:
Thanks to Kate, I was able to try some of the other products in the Redefine Line.
Redefine Eye Cloths: Not only do these remove eye makeup beautifully, they also claim to reduce the appearance of fine lines, puffiness and wrinkles! I tried using these after using my old makeup remover, and the results were quite revealing. These really get the job done!
Enhancements Microdermabrasion Paste Packets: After using these for first time, I couldn’t stop feeling my face! My skin immediately felt softer and brighter. One packet goes a long way.
Lip Renewing Serum: I have very sensitive lips. Two days in a row of lipstick and my lips are raw! One of these little ampules spread over my lips and wow! Very moisturizing! My lips felt great the next day too.
Eye cream: I can sum up my results with this product quite easily. I had been up all night with a sick child, and the next morning, to feel a bit more alive, I used the REDEFINE Regimen followed by the Eye Cream for the first time. My husband took one look at me and asked, “How come you look so refreshed?!”
CONCLUSIONS:
I was really pleased with how my skin felt after each time I used the products. My skin kept improving in feel and appearance every time I washed my face. The products are really nicely formulated – they aren’t too smelly or greasy, and feel great!
The cost of the Regimen might be one factor that would make some a little wary of continuing. However, for the price, you do get a good quantity of each of the products.
Judging by what I have left at this point, one set would likely last me a little more than two months. That’s less than $2/day!
Great looking skin might just be worth it.
